Assessment first

We start with an assessment to understand your child’s current maths level, identify any gaps in understanding across multiple year levels of the Australian Curriculum, and see where they are ready to move ahead. From there, we create a personalised weekly learning plan tailored to their needs.

Personalised Learning Plans

Your child’s personalised learning plan is delivered weekly and can be completed at home on a tablet or computer. Each Monday, new 20-minute maths lessons are added based on your child’s progress, helping keep learning at the right level and supporting a consistent learning routine.

Proven Progress

As your child strengthens their foundations, you’ll see them build skills and confidence in maths, and keep moving forward at a pace that feels right for them.

Expert Tutors Available

If your child needs extra support, our online maths tutors are there to explain concepts further and answer questions, so your child can continue with confidence.

Year 4 Maths: What’s Covered and How We Help

Year 4 maths covers a range of skills across the Australian Curriculum. The overview below shows some of the key areas your child works on during the year, and how Kinetic Education can support them. Every child starts from a different point, so we begin with an assessment and create a personalised learning plan based on their current level.

This means your child is always working through curriculum-aligned lessons, at a pace that suits them.

Area
What Year 4 Maths Covers
How Kinetic Helps
Number and place value
Place value to thousands, reading and writing numbers, odd and even numbers, comparing with greater than and less than, rounding to 10 and 100, and estimating sums and differences.
We find out what your child can already do and where they need more practice, then shape their weekly lessons to match.
Addition and subtraction
Mental strategies like splitting and jumping, column addition with carrying into the thousands, and subtraction with regrouping and trading.
New strategies are introduced clearly, with worked examples and instant feedback so your child can practise with confidence.
Multiplication and division
Arrays, times tables to 12, long multiplication with two- and three-digit numbers, and an introduction to division.
We build these skills up step by step, so your child develops real fluency and understands the methods, not just the answers.
Fractions and decimals
Fractions and equivalent fractions, mixed and improper fractions, and tenths and hundredths as decimals.
Each idea is broken into clear, manageable steps so your child can build understanding before moving ahead.
Measurement, shape and space
Length, mass, capacity and temperature, perimeter, area and volume, angles and symmetry, and telling time.
Lessons reinforce these skills with clear explanations, examples and instant feedback.
Patterns, data and problem solving
Number patterns and square numbers, showing data and describing chance, and solving word problems.
We help your child practise these skills in a way that builds confidence and strengthens their understanding.

Melanie

After years of struggling with maths, Melanie’s daughter boosted her grades and confidence in just a few months with Kinetic Education. She has made so much progress that her new teacher didn’t even realise she had struggled with maths in the past.

Louise

Louise’s daughters started the school year feeling anxious to go to class, worried they wouldn’t understand maths concepts. But in just 4 months, their confidence has grown, and they are now happy to go to maths classes at school. Not only this, but their school reports and grades have boosted, but most importantly their confidence has too!

Rosie

Rosie came to Kinetic Education looking for support for her two children, who both needed completely different support. Her daughter was really struggling with maths, and homework time was always stressful, while her son was one step ahead at school and starting to feel bored. With support from us, Rosie’s daughter is now able to work through new concepts confidently, and her son gets the challenges he needs to stay one step ahead.

Year 4 Maths Tutoring Starts with Identifying Your Child’s Level

When your child gets started with Kinetic Education, their first step is completing our Maths Doctor assessment. This checks their maths skills across multiple year levels of the Australian Curriculum, helping us understand how they are going with key areas such as place value, multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, measurement and problem solving.

The assessment takes up to 45 minutes and gives you a clear picture of their current skills, including where they may need more practice and where they are ready to move ahead. From there, we create a personalised weekly learning plan, so your child can work through the curriculum at the right pace for them.

Personalised learning

Every Monday, we update your child's learning plan with new maths activities for the week, selected based on their assessment results and progress. Your child's learning plan is structured around three learning stages: Revision and Catch-Up, Consolidation, and Extension.

Revision and Catch-Up

When your child first starts with Kinetic Education, their learning plan targets the knowledge gaps identified in their assessment. For Year 4 students, this may include revisiting earlier number skills, place value, addition, subtraction, times tables or early multiplication and division concepts they need before moving into more complex work.

Consolidation

Once their foundations are stronger, your child practises the skills being covered in Year 4 maths. This may include building fluency with times tables, longer multiplication and division, decimals, fractions, measurement, area, perimeter, volume and problem solving.

Extension

When your child is feeling confident in Year 4 maths, we give them the opportunity to move ahead while still working at a pace that suits them.

Real Maths Tutors for Year 4 Students

Year 4 is a year of building real fluency, with times tables, longer multiplication and division, and the first steps into decimals. The level of support provided by Kinetic really stands out!

Both of my children, one in Year 4 and the other in Prep, are enrolled in Kinetic Education, and it has been extremely beneficial. The initial assessments were particularly useful in identifying any gaps in their knowledge, and customised lessons were created to address these and challenge them at the same time. They also enjoy the work. It’s a fantastic tool for parents as well. Additionally, the level of support provided by Kinetic really stands out. Rachel is exceptional—thorough, patient, and always ready to answer my questions. Her support has been invaluable!

Results speak for themselves!!

Both girls Year 4 and 6 began the year with no confidence and general dislike of mathematics. After 4 months with Kinetic the girls are completely confident, have an enjoyment of maths I never thought possible and often lead the classroom. Could not be happier with their progress. Highly recommend.

Brilliant program highly recommended.

My son started with Kinetic Education in year 4 he did his first test showing he was missing knowledge from year 3 and was behind. A year later he is now at a year 6/7 level. He started with no confidence in his work and ended up with so much confidence. It’s an easy platform to use and the educators are available to help if needed. Brilliant program highly recommended.

Year 4 Maths Tutoring FAQs

Is Year 4 a good time to start maths tutoring?

Yes. Year 4 introduces a lot of new fluency, from times tables and longer multiplication and division to fractions and decimals. Gaps at this stage can make later maths harder, so it is a great time to make sure your child has strong foundations and feels confident with each new step.

What does a typical week look like for a Year 4 student?

Each Monday, your child's learning plan is updated with new maths activities for the week. The lessons are designed to take around 15 to 20 minutes a day, short enough to fit around school and family life, but consistent enough to make a real difference over time. Your child works through their activities on a tablet or computer, at whatever time works best for your family. Each lesson includes clear explanations, examples and instant feedback, so your child isn't just practising, they're learning as they go. If they get stuck on something, they can contact their tutor for support after school Monday to Thursday. You'll also receive a weekly progress report so you can see exactly what they worked on and how they went.

What if I'm not sure what level my child is at?

That is exactly what our Maths Doctor assessment is designed to help with. It checks your child's skills across multiple year levels of the Australian Curriculum, so we can see where they may need more practice and where they are ready to move ahead. From there, we create a personalised weekly learning plan matched to their level.

What if my child is ahead and ready for more?

Kinetic Education can support children who are ready for extension too. If your child is confident with their current work, their personalised learning plan can move them into more challenging activities so they can keep progressing.

What new maths will my child meet in Year 4?

Year 4 builds real fluency. Your child works through their times tables to 12, longer multiplication and an introduction to division, builds on fractions with equivalent fractions and decimals such as tenths and hundredths, and starts measuring area, perimeter and volume. Their personalised learning plan introduces these at a pace that suits them.
