How Kinetic Education and Kumon Work

What is Kinetic Education?

For more than 30 years, Kinetic Education has supported over 100,000 Australian families, helping children build confidence, catch up at school and discover a love of learning.

Our approach combines the best of both worlds: real Aussie tutors who understand how children learn, and smart technology that makes every lesson personal, interactive and effective.

What is Kumon?

Kumon is a well-known learning method that has supported many families around the world. Its approach is built around repetition, routine and independent practice, helping children strengthen skills through regular worksheet-based tasks. Children usually attend sessions in person twice per week with instructor support, while also completing worksheets at home.

Choosing between Kinetic Education and Kumon?

Start with these 5 questions

How will tutoring fit into your family’s weekly routine?

Kinetic Education

Kinetic Education is fully online, so lessons can fit around your family’s schedule, whether your child is learning at home or on the go. Each child begins with an initial assessment, giving parents a clearer picture of their current level and where their learning gaps may be. From there, they follow a personalised learning plan, completing 20-minute lessons four times a week. Each lesson targets what your child needs and adjusts based on their progress, helping them build strong study habits through regular, focused practice. The lessons are designed to teach, with Australian tutors available to support throughout the week when needed.

Kumon

Kumon combines in-person and at-home learning. Children visit their local Kumon centre twice a week, typically for around 30 minutes per subject per session. They complete an initial assessment before being placed at the right starting level, then work through a structured worksheet pathway. During centre sessions, children work independently, with instructors there to mark work, correct mistakes and help when needed. They continue with daily worksheets at home between visits. This regular routine is a core part of the Kumon model.

Kinetic Education builds consistency through shorter, targeted lessons that can fit around family life. Kumon builds consistency through regular centre visits and daily worksheet practice. Both models support routine, but they ask different things of your week.

What type of learning experience will keep your child engaged?

Kinetic Education

Kinetic Education gives children a personalised learning plan that is adjusted each week based on their progress, so lessons continue to target what they need next. The lessons are interactive and engaging, with hints, clues and instant feedback to support children as they learn. Questions are presented in different formats, including typing, drop-down answers, click-and-drag activities, missing words and missing letters. Work is marked automatically, giving children feedback as they move through each lesson.

Kumon

Kumon uses a worksheet-based learning model. Children begin at the right starting level and work through a structured sequence of worksheets, studying examples, drawing on past learning and practising each concept until they are ready to move forward. At the centre, instructors mark work, correct mistakes and give hints when needed. Children then continue with daily worksheets at home between visits. Kumon worksheets may be completed on paper or, at participating centres, through Kumon Connect, which allows students to complete the same worksheet-based program digitally on a tablet.

Kinetic Education uses interactive lessons, instant feedback and weekly adjustments to personalise the learning experience. Kumon uses a structured worksheet pathway, where children draw on past learning, practise independently and repeat concepts until they are ready to move forward.

Does tutoring support the Australian Curriculum?

Kinetic Education

Kinetic Education lessons are aligned with the Australian Curriculum, helping children strengthen the skills they need for school and feel more confident in class. Each child begins with an initial assessment that identifies their current level and where their learning gaps may be. Their personalised learning plan then addresses those gaps with lessons targeted to what they need next.

This means children can stay connected to the curriculum while moving at a pace that suits them. For some, this may mean catching up on earlier concepts. For others, it may mean getting one step ahead, so when new concepts come up at school, they already feel more prepared.

Kumon

Kumon follows its own structured curriculum, used across centres around the world, with topics that also appear within the Australian Curriculum. Rather than moving by age or year level, students progress based on ability, which may give some children the opportunity to work ahead and become familiar with concepts before they arise in class.

Kinetic Education is aligned with the Australian Curriculum, with personalised lessons that address learning gaps and support school-based concepts at each child’s pace. Kumon follows its own structured pathway, with students progressing based on ability rather than year level, helping them build skills through practice, repetition and progression.

How will you know your child is making progress?

Kinetic Education

Kinetic Education gives parents clear visibility over their child’s progress through weekly reports and their child’s learning portal. Parents can see completed lessons, track ongoing progress and understand how their child is moving through their personalised learning plan. Tutors also keep families updated through regular phone calls, giving parents the chance to discuss their child’s learning, ask questions and share whether anything needs to be adapted.

Kumon

Kumon tracks progress through its level system, worksheet completion and instructor monitoring. This may vary from centre to centre, but parents can usually speak with instructors after sessions to discuss how their child is going. Kumon also offers Kumon Connect, a digital version of its worksheets where students complete their work on a tablet instead of paper. This allows parents and children to check details such as worksheet completion time and overall study progress, while instructors can monitor daily progress and provide feedback or hints when needed.

Kinetic Education gives parents regular feedback through weekly progress reports, the online learning portal and tutor communication. Kumon shows progress through worksheet completion, level progression, instructor feedback and, where Kumon Connect is available, digital study records.

How does the cost work for your family?

Kinetic Education

With Kinetic Education, pricing starts from $29 per week for the family. Kinetic Education also offers two weeks of free tutoring and a free Maths Doctor diagnostic assessment, helping families understand where their child is currently at and where their learning gaps may be before getting started.

Kumon

Kumon Australia lists an initial enrolment fee of $100 and a monthly tuition fee of $160 per month, per subject in Australia. Kumon may also run introductory offers, such as a one-month free trial for a second subject, depending on the centre and current promotion.

Kinetic Education offers family-based pricing, which can make costs easier to plan across multiple children or subjects. Kumon is priced per subject, so the total monthly cost will depend on how many subjects a child studies and how many children are enrolled.
