What General Mathematics covers
General Mathematics is a senior secondary subject focused on applying maths to real-life situations rather than on abstract or calculus-based work. It is a common senior maths pathway for students who want to keep building practical maths skills while working towards an ATAR.
Across Years 11 and 12 it covers consumer and financial maths such as interest, loans and budgeting, data analysis including interpreting and comparing data sets and time series, measurement and trigonometry, linear relationships, sequences and growth, and topics like networks and matrices. Because so much of it is set in real-world contexts, students often need to read worded problems carefully, identify the important information and decide which maths concepts to use before they can start solving the question.
