How We Help Your Child Feel More Confident with NAPLAN English and Literacy

NAPLAN English is less about memorising rules and more about applying them. It draws on reading comprehension, writing (narrative or persuasive, depending on the year), and conventions of language, and asks children to use those skills across a range of real texts and tasks.

The test is completed online for most year levels and domains, though Year 3 writing remains a paper-based test nationally. Reading and conventions of language are adaptive, meaning the questions adjust to how a child is answering as they go, while writing is a single set task completed within a time limit. It rewards genuine reading and writing understanding, not just familiarity with test format. Because the test spans so much of the English curriculum, a child's result tends to reflect how solid their everyday reading, writing and grammar foundations are, rather than how much last-minute practice they did.

Understanding Your Child's Level

When your child gets started with Kinetic Education, our English tutors begin by identifying their current level against the Australian Curriculum. This helps us understand the skills they've mastered and where they need the most support right now. From there, we create a personalised learning plan tailored to your child's needs.

Personalised Learning Plans

Your child's personalised learning plan is delivered weekly and can be completed at home on a tablet or computer. New 20-minute English lessons are added based on your child's progress, helping keep learning at the right level and supporting a consistent learning routine.

Proven Progress

As your child strengthens their foundations, you'll see them build skills and confidence in reading and writing, and keep moving forward at a pace that feels right for them.

English Tutors Available

Every family is matched with an English tutor who oversees their child's personalised learning plan and progress. Tutors also provide additional support with writing tasks, including planning, structure, grammar, punctuation and feedback on each draft.

NAPLAN English and Literacy: What's Covered and How We Help

NAPLAN English is sat in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, and what it focuses on grows with each one. The overview below shows what each test draws on and how Kinetic Education can support your child at that stage.

Every child starts from a different point, so their personalised learning plan is tailored to their current level and continues to adapt based on their progress and results.

NAPLAN Year
What the English Test Focuses On
How Kinetic Helps
Year 3 (first NAPLAN)
Reading short texts and answering questions, narrative or persuasive writing basics, and conventions of language such as capital letters, full stops, spelling and simple grammar.
We help find any gaps from the early years and build the core reading, writing and grammar skills your child needs, so their first NAPLAN feels less overwhelming. See our Year 3 NAPLAN practice tests.
Year 5
Longer texts and more inferential questions, more developed persuasive or narrative writing, and conventions of language such as commas, apostrophes and proper nouns.
We help your child strengthen comprehension, structure their writing more clearly, and practise the grammar and punctuation rules tested at this level. See our Year 5 NAPLAN practice tests.
Year 7
A wider range of fiction and non-fiction texts, persuasive writing with clearer structure and technique, and more advanced conventions of language such as clauses and subject-verb agreement.
We help strengthen any primary school skills that still need work, while supporting the new high school writing expectations your child is starting to meet. See our Year 7 NAPLAN practice tests.
Year 9
Analytical reading of extracts and non-fiction texts, persuasive writing with confident structure and technique, and more advanced grammar and punctuation accuracy.
We help fill any gaps from earlier years and build the confidence your child needs for more complex reading and writing tasks. See our Year 9 NAPLAN practice tests.

Melanie

After years of struggling with maths, Melanie’s daughter boosted her grades and confidence in just a few months with Kinetic Education. She has made so much progress that her new teacher didn’t even realise she had struggled with maths in the past.

Louise

Louise’s daughters started the school year feeling anxious to go to class, worried they wouldn’t understand maths concepts. But in just 4 months, their confidence has grown, and they are now happy to go to maths classes at school. Not only this, but their school reports and grades have boosted, but most importantly their confidence has too!

Rosie

Rosie came to Kinetic Education looking for support for her two children, who both needed completely different support. Her daughter was really struggling with maths, and homework time was always stressful, while her son was one step ahead at school and starting to feel bored. With support from us, Rosie’s daughter is now able to work through new concepts confidently, and her son gets the challenges he needs to stay one step ahead.

English Tutoring Starts with Identifying Your Child’s Level

When your child gets started with Kinetic Education, we begin by identifying where they are currently working in English, including the reading, writing and conventions of language skills used in NAPLAN. This helps us see where they may need more practice and where they are ready to move ahead. From there, we create a personalised weekly learning plan, so your child can work through the curriculum at the right pace for them.

Personalised learning

Our approach to NAPLAN is to build the reading, writing and grammar skills behind the test, not to drill practice papers. When a child genuinely understands the work, the test takes care of itself, and the skills stay with them long after NAPLAN is over. Here is how it works:

We update your child's learning plan with new English activities for the week, selected based on their progress each week. Their learning plan moves through three stages: Revision and Catch-Up, Consolidation, and Extension.

Revision and Catch-Up

When your child first starts with Kinetic Education, their learning plan targets the areas they need the most support with. This may mean revisiting earlier reading, writing or grammar skills, strengthening important foundations and helping them feel more confident with the types of tasks they may encounter in NAPLAN.

Consolidation

As your child builds their understanding, their learning plan continues to reinforce the skills they are currently working on. Regular practice helps them use English skills across the curriculum, apply what they have learned to different question and writing formats, and become more confident working through NAPLAN.

Extension

When your child is ready to move ahead, their learning plan introduces more challenging English across the curriculum. This helps them extend their understanding, strengthen their reading and writing skills and approach more complex NAPLAN tasks with greater confidence.

Personalised Learning with Real Tutor Support

Our interactive lessons break each idea into clear steps using examples, text and instant feedback. Because the lessons are completed online, your child also gets more comfortable reading and answering questions on a screen, just as they will in NAPLAN.

If your child needs extra help, their tutor can step in. Tutors provide feedback on writing tasks, including planning, structure, grammar, punctuation and clarity. Tutor support is available after school, at no extra cost.

Parent support: You do not have to wonder how your child is going. Each week you receive a report on what they've worked on and how they're progressing, and you can call the Parent Helpline to speak directly with their tutor.

FAQs

What does NAPLAN English cover?

NAPLAN English covers reading, writing and conventions of language, sat by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Reading and conventions of language test comprehension, grammar, punctuation and spelling, while writing asks students to complete a single narrative or persuasive piece, depending on the year and prompt.

Which years sit NAPLAN?

NAPLAN is sat in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Year 3 is the first time children take it, which can make that year feel a little different for families.

Can you actually prepare for NAPLAN English?

Yes, though the best preparation is building strong, lasting reading and writing skills rather than drilling practice papers. When a child understands the work and is comfortable with the online format, they tend to approach the test with far more confidence.

Will tutoring help my child with NAPLAN?

It can. Because our tutoring identifies and fills gaps aligned to the Australian Curriculum, children build the underlying reading, writing and grammar skills NAPLAN draws on. Many of our families have seen real improvement in their child's NAPLAN results.

How much does it cost?

Kinetic Education's English support builds NAPLAN English skills alongside the other key areas of the Australian English curriculum. It starts from $29 per week for the family, and your first two weeks are free.

How is this different to your practice tests?

This page is about building the English skills behind NAPLAN reading, writing and conventions of language. For practice questions and test familiarity at a specific year level, our Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 NAPLAN practice-test pages are the place to go. The two work together: strong skills first, then practice to build comfort.
