Geometry can be difficult because it asks children to think about maths in a more visual way. Instead of only working with numbers, they need to understand shapes, space, position, angles and measurement.
It can also become more challenging when geometry starts to connect with other maths skills. As children move into higher year levels, topics like coordinates, Pythagoras’ theorem and trigonometry begin to use multiplication, algebra, formulas and problem solving. If those foundations are not strong, geometry can feel much harder than it needs to.
That’s why it’s so important to find and fix any gaps, so your child can build confidence with geometry. When the foundations are stronger, they can understand new ideas more clearly and apply them with more confidence.

We start with an assessment to understand your child’s current maths level, identify any gaps in understanding across multiple year levels of the Australian Curriculum, and see where they are ready to move ahead. From there, we create a personalised weekly learning plan tailored to their needs.

Personalised Learning Plans

Your child’s personalised learning plan is delivered weekly and can be completed at home on a tablet or computer. Each Monday, new 20-minute maths lessons are added based on your child’s progress, helping keep learning at the right level and supporting a consistent learning routine.

Geometry and Space: What’s Covered and How We Help

Geometry builds across multiple year levels of the Australian Curriculum, from naming shapes in the early years through to Pythagoras and trigonometry in Year 10. The overview below shows how these skills develop over time and how Kinetic Education can support your child at each stage.

Foundation – Year 2
Children begin by naming and sorting two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects. They describe position, direction and simple features such as sides, corners and faces.
We use visuals and interactive activities to help your child name and sort shapes, notice sides, corners and faces, and describe where things sit in relation to each other. Getting this language right early makes the geometry that follows far easier to follow.
Year 3 – Year 4
Children explore angles, symmetry and transformations, including slides, flips and turns. They also use grid references and simple maps, and begin classifying shapes by their properties.
Transformations are much clearer when a child can watch a shape move, so our lessons show slides, flips and turns rather than describing them. We also give your child plenty of practice with grids, maps and sorting shapes by what they actually have in common.
Year 5 – Year 6
Children measure and estimate angles, classify triangles and quadrilaterals, and plot points on the Cartesian plane. They also explore nets of three-dimensional objects.
We work through measuring and estimating angles, classifying triangles and quadrilaterals, and plotting points step by step. If your child is confident with numbers but finds the visual side harder, this is the stage where that extra time pays off.
Year 7 – Year 8
Students work with angle relationships, parallel lines, shapes, congruence, area and volume. Geometry becomes more focused on reasoning and explaining why rules work.
Geometry now asks students to explain why a rule works, not just apply it. We build that reasoning around angle relationships, parallel lines and congruence, and strengthen the number skills the area and volume formulas depend on.
Year 9 – Year 10
Students learn Pythagoras’ theorem, right-angled trigonometry, similarity, congruence and geometric reasoning. These topics also connect with algebra and number skills.
Pythagoras and trigonometry lean heavily on algebra and multiplication, so we check those foundations first and rebuild them if the assessment shows a gap. From there we help your child work through similarity, congruence and geometric reasoning with more confidence.

Maths Tutoring Starts with Identifying Your Child’s Level

When your child gets started with Kinetic Education, their first step is completing our Maths Doctor assessment. This checks their maths skills across multiple year levels of the Australian Curriculum, including fractions, decimals and percentages.

The assessment helps us understand their current skills, identify any earlier gaps that may be making these topics more difficult and see where they are ready to move ahead.

It takes up to 45 minutes and gives us a clear starting point for your child’s personalised weekly learning plan. From there, we can strengthen the right foundations while helping them continue working through the curriculum at a pace that suits them.

Personalised learning

At Kinetic Education, algebra concepts are included in your child’s personalised learning plan from the very beginning, as part of their maths support aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Here is how it works:

Every Monday, we update your child’s learning plan with new maths activities for the week, selected around their assessment results and progress. Their learning plan moves through three stages: Revision and Catch-Up, Consolidation, and Extension.

Revision and Catch-Up

When your child first starts with Kinetic Education, their learning plan targets the knowledge gaps identified in their assessment. This may mean revisiting earlier fractions, decimals or percentages skills and strengthening the foundations they need before moving into more complex work.

Consolidation

As your child builds their understanding, their learning plan continues to reinforce the skills they are currently working on. Regular practice helps them use maths skills across the curriculum, including fractions, decimals and percentages, with more confidence and apply what they have learned to different types of questions.

Extension

When your child is ready to move ahead, their learning plan introduces more challenging maths across the curriculum, including fractions, decimals and percentages. This helps them extend their understanding, build confidence and apply their skills to more complex questions and real-world maths.

Personalised Learning with Real Tutor Support

Our interactive lessons break each idea into clear steps using pictures, animations, text and audio. Your child can build geometry skills from naming shapes in the early years through to trigonometry in high school.
If your child needs extra help, their tutor can step in. Using screen sharing and a digital whiteboard, tutors can support them with geometry questions and other maths concepts in real time. Tutor support is available after school, Monday to Thursday, up to 10 hours per week, at no extra cost.
Parent Support: You do not have to wonder how your child is going. Each week you receive a report on what they have worked on and how they are progressing, and you can call the Parent Helpline to speak directly with their tutor.

What does geometry cover in primary school?

In primary school, geometry covers naming and sorting shapes and objects, describing position and direction, angles, symmetry, transformations such as slides and flips, and reading simple maps and grids. It builds the language and reasoning children use in high school.

My child is good with numbers but finds shapes hard. Is that normal? 

Yes, completely. Geometry uses visual and spatial thinking, which is different to working with numbers in a line. Many strong mathematicians find one easier than the other. Our lessons build both, so your child can grow the skills that feel harder.

When do children learn Pythagoras' theorem and trigonometry?

These are introduced around Year 9 and developed in Year 10. They combine geometry with algebra and multiplication, so children who are confident with those number skills tend to find them more manageable.
