We start with an assessment to understand your child’s current maths level, identify any gaps in understanding across multiple year levels of the Australian Curriculum, and see where they are ready to move ahead. From there, we create a personalised weekly learning plan tailored to their needs.

Your child’s personalised learning plan is delivered weekly and can be completed at home on a tablet or computer. Each Monday, new 20-minute maths lessons are added based on your child’s progress, helping keep learning at the right level and supporting a consistent learning routine.

Times Tables and Multiplication: What’s Covered and How We Help

Multiplication builds across multiple year levels of the Australian Curriculum, from equal groups in the early years through to multiplicative reasoning in senior maths. The overview below shows how these skills develop over time and how Kinetic Education can support your child at each stage.

Foundation – Year 2
Children begin with equal groups, skip counting, doubling and sharing objects fairly. They also start using arrays, which helps build the early foundations for multiplication and division.
We use pictures, arrays and interactive activities so your child sees multiplication as equal groups rather than something to be memorised. Understanding it this way makes the facts far easier to hold on to later.
Year 3 – Year 4
Children build their multiplication facts and connect multiplication with division. They learn about factors and multiples, work towards recalling facts up to 10 × 10, and begin using written strategies for larger numbers.
This is the stage where recall is built, and where children who fall behind often stay behind. We work on the facts alongside the meaning behind them, so your child can answer a question asked out of order rather than reciting a table from the beginning.
Year 5 – Year 6
Children multiply larger numbers and work with factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers. They also multiply and divide by powers of ten, and begin applying multiplication to fractions and decimals.
We strengthen any facts that are still slow, then build into larger numbers, factors, multiples and powers of ten. If recall is what is holding your child back, that comes first, because the new work depends on it.
Year 7 – Year 8
Students use multiplication with integers, fractions and decimals. They also work with index notation, ratios, rates and other problem-solving contexts.
We help your child multiply confidently with integers, fractions and decimals, then apply those skills to index notation, ratios and rates. At this level it is often the arithmetic rather than the concept that causes trouble.
Year 9 – Year 10
Students apply multiplicative reasoning in algebra, indices, scientific notation and surds.
We revisit any recall gaps that are slowing your child down, then help them apply multiplicative reasoning across algebra, indices, scientific notation and surds with more confidence.

Maths Tutoring Starts with Identifying Your Child’s Level

When your child gets started with Kinetic Education, their first step is completing our Maths Doctor assessment. This checks their maths skills across multiple year levels of the Australian Curriculum, including fractions, decimals and percentages.

The assessment helps us understand their current skills, identify any earlier gaps that may be making these topics more difficult and see where they are ready to move ahead.

It takes up to 45 minutes and gives us a clear starting point for your child’s personalised weekly learning plan. From there, we can strengthen the right foundations while helping them continue working through the curriculum at a pace that suits them.

Personalised learning

At Kinetic Education, algebra concepts are included in your child’s personalised learning plan from the very beginning, as part of their maths support aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Here is how it works:

Every Monday, we update your child’s learning plan with new maths activities for the week, selected around their assessment results and progress. Their learning plan moves through three stages: Revision and Catch-Up, Consolidation, and Extension.

Revision and Catch-Up

When your child first starts with Kinetic Education, their learning plan targets the knowledge gaps identified in their assessment. This may mean revisiting earlier fractions, decimals or percentages skills and strengthening the foundations they need before moving into more complex work.

Consolidation

As your child builds their understanding, their learning plan continues to reinforce the skills they are currently working on. Regular practice helps them use maths skills across the curriculum, including fractions, decimals and percentages, with more confidence and apply what they have learned to different types of questions.

Extension

When your child is ready to move ahead, their learning plan introduces more challenging maths across the curriculum, including fractions, decimals and percentages. This helps them extend their understanding, build confidence and apply their skills to more complex questions and real-world maths.

Personalised Learning with Real Tutor Support

Our interactive lessons break each idea into clear steps using pictures, animations, text and audio. Your child can build skills across the curriculum, from early number concepts through to more advanced maths in high school.

If your child needs extra help, their tutor can step in. Using screen sharing and a digital whiteboard, tutors can walk through questions in real time. Tutor support is available after school, Monday to Thursday, up to 10 hours per week, at no extra cost.

Parent Support: You do not have to wonder how your child is going. Each week you receive a report on what they have worked on and how they are progressing, and you can call the Parent Helpline to speak directly with their tutor.

FAQs

What age should children know their times tables?

Children begin building the foundations for multiplication in the early years through equal groups, skip counting, doubling, sharing and arrays. Most children then build their multiplication facts more formally across Years 3 and 4, working towards quick recall of tables up to 10 × 10 by the end of Year 4.

Children develop at different paces, so some need more time and practice to make sure their foundations are strong. They may also need the chance to go back, revisit earlier skills and strengthen their understanding, which is where Kinetic Education can help.

My child can recite the tables but freezes on random questions. Why?

This usually means they have memorised the order rather than learned the relationships. Our lessons build genuine understanding of what multiplication means, so your child can recall any fact, not just chant a table from the start.

My child is in Year 6 and still counts on their fingers. Is it too late? 

Not at all. The assessment finds where the gap began, often in Year 3 or 4, and the learning plan rebuilds those facts with the understanding behind them. Many of our students close this gap in a single term.

How are times tables taught in the lessons? 

Through short, interactive lessons that use animations, pictures and a mix of question types with instant feedback, so practice feels manageable rather than repetitive. Tutors are on hand to explain anything that isn't clicking.
