How We Help Your Child Feel More Confident with Phonics and Reading

Phonics develops in a clear sequence, from individual letter sounds through to blending, sight words and full sentences. If a step in that sequence is missed or only partly understood, later steps become harder to build on.
What can look like a reading or spelling problem in Year 3 or 4 is often traced back to a phonics step that never fully clicked in Foundation or Year 1. As the classroom moves on to more advanced reading, that early gap can quietly keep making things harder.
That is why identifying exactly where the gap began matters more than simply practising more reading.
We help your child begin at the right level, strengthen the phonics and reading skills they may have missed, and build the confidence they need to read fluently.

Understanding Your Child's Level

When your child gets started with Kinetic Education, our English tutors begin by identifying their current level against the Australian Curriculum. This helps us understand the skills they've mastered and where they need the most support right now. From there, we create a personalised learning plan tailored to your child's needs.

Personalised Learning Plans

Your child's personalised learning plan is delivered weekly and can be completed at home on a tablet or computer. New 20-minute English lessons are added based on your child's progress, helping keep learning at the right level and supporting a consistent learning routine.

Proven Progress

As your child strengthens their foundations, you'll see them build skills and confidence in reading and writing, and keep moving forward at a pace that feels right for them.

EnglishTutor Support

Every family is matched with an English tutor who oversees their child's personalised learning plan and progress. Tutors also provide additional support with writing tasks, including planning, structure, grammar, punctuation and feedback on each draft.

Phonics and Early Reading: What's Covered and How We Help

Phonics and early reading build in a clear sequence, mostly across Foundation and the early primary years. The overview below shows how these skills develop and, for children who need it later on, how earlier gaps are identified and addressed.

Every child starts from a different point, so their personalised learning plan is tailored to their current level and continues to adapt based on their progress and results.

Year Level
What the Curriculum Covers
How Kinetic Helps
Foundation
Individual letter sounds taught in a structured sequence, blending sounds into simple three-letter words, and matching sight words to pictures.
We find out which letter sounds your child already knows and where they need more practice, then shape their weekly lessons to match.
Year 1
Building full sentences, reading three-letter words with growing fluency, rhyming words and early comprehension of short stories.
We check how confidently your child is blending and reading, and target any remaining phonics gaps before moving on.
Year 2
Consonant and vowel blends, more complex spelling patterns, and reading with more independence and expression.
If earlier phonics steps were missed, we revisit them directly, so your child's reading fluency has a solid base to build on.
Year 3 – Year 4
Reading becomes more about comprehension and fluency than decoding, but children with earlier phonics gaps often still hesitate over less familiar words.
We identify whether reading difficulty at this stage traces back to a phonics gap, and rebuild that foundation before focusing on comprehension.
Year 5 and beyond
Phonics is no longer explicitly taught, but strong early foundations continue to support spelling, vocabulary and confident reading of unfamiliar words.
For older children still affected by early gaps, we go right back to basics, however far back that needs to be, and rebuild from there.

English Tutoring Starts with Identifying Your Child’s Level

When your child gets started with Kinetic Education, we begin by identifying where they are currently working in English, including phonics, blending and early reading. This helps us see where they may need more practice and where they are ready to move ahead. From there, we create a personalised weekly learning plan, so your child can work through the curriculum at the right pace for them.

Personalised learning

We update your child's learning plan with new English activities for the week, selected based on their progress each week. Their learning plan moves through three stages: Revision and Catch-Up, Consolidation, and Extension.

Revision and Catch-Up

When your child first starts with Kinetic Education, their learning plan targets the areas they need the most support with. This may mean revisiting earlier letter sounds, blending or sight words and strengthening the foundations they need before moving into more complex reading.

Consolidation

As your child builds their understanding, their learning plan continues to reinforce the phonics and reading skills they are currently working on, helping them read with more fluency and confidence.

Extension

When your child is ready to move ahead, their learning plan introduces more challenging reading and vocabulary, helping them extend their understanding at a pace that suits them.

Personalised Learning with Real Tutor Support

Phonics and early reading can become difficult when an earlier step has not fully clicked. When your family joins Kinetic Education, you are matched with a tutor who helps your child get off to a strong start, oversees their personalised learning plan and keeps an eye on their progress each week.

Each activity is designed to teach your child step by step, provide instant feedback and help them build confidence as they work through phonics and early reading.

Our English tutors also provide additional support with writing tasks. If your child is working on a piece of writing, their tutor can give feedback on planning, structure, grammar, punctuation and clarity, helping them improve their next draft with confidence.

Our tutors are also here for parents. You can speak with your tutor about your child's learning needs, progress and weekly reports, so you know how they are going and what they are working on next.

Tutor support includes:

  • A dedicated English tutor matched with your family
  • Oversight of your child's personalised learning plan
  • Feedback on writing tasks, including planning, structure, grammar, punctuation and clarity
  • Guidance for parents on progress, learning needs and weekly reports

FAQs

My child is in Year 2 and still finding it hard to blend sounds and read simple words. Can Kinetic Education help?

Algebra starts earlier than most parents realise. From Foundation, children work with patterns and missing numbers, which are the first algebra skills. It becomes more formal in Year 7, when letters are used to stand for unknown values.

My child is in Year 8 and lost with equations. Where do you start?

Yes, this is exactly the kind of thing we look for. If your child's difficulty traces back to a specific letter sound or blending step that wasn't fully understood, their learning plan will address that first.

Will this help my child prepare for NAPLAN?

Strong phonics and reading foundations support the reading component of NAPLAN, sat in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Because our tutoring identifies and fills gaps aligned to the Australian Curriculum, children who build these foundations early tend to approach reading tasks, including NAPLAN, with more confidence.

My child is in Year 4 and still hesitates over unfamiliar words. Is it too late to fix the basics?

Not at all. We identify where the gap originated, whether that's a specific letter sound, blend or sight word set from Foundation or Year 1, and their learning plan addresses it from that point, whatever your child's current year level.

How is phonics and early reading content delivered?

Through interactive lessons designed to teach your child at the right level, each concept is broken into clear steps using pictures, audio and text. Activities include a range of question types with instant feedback, so your child can practise blending, letter sounds and reading in a way that feels manageable.

How much does it cost?

Kinetic Education's English support covers phonics and early reading, along with the other key areas of the Australian English curriculum. It starts from $29 per week for the family, and your first two weeks are free.

Can I speak to someone about my child's specific needs before getting started?

Yes. When you book your free demonstration, we'll chat about how your child is currently going with reading, what they're finding difficult, and how Kinetic Education could support them.
