How We Help Your Child Feel More Confident with Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension builds gradually across many year levels. A child may understand simple stories, then become stuck as texts get longer, more inferential questions are introduced, or unfamiliar vocabulary gets in the way. Gaps can develop along the way and may not become obvious until the work gets harder.

What feels like a sudden difficulty is often linked to an earlier skill that never fully clicked, whether that's basic reading fluency, vocabulary, or working out what a text implies rather than states outright. As the classroom keeps moving, those gaps can make each new text feel harder to understand.

That is why identifying the gaps and finding the right starting point matters. Your child’s English lessons also help build comprehension more broadly by teaching them to understand instructions, follow lesson content, identify key information and apply what they have learned in their answers.

We help your child begin at the right level, strengthen the comprehension skills they may have missed and build the understanding they need to keep moving forward with more confidence.

Understanding Your Child's Level

When your child gets started with Kinetic Education, our English tutors begin by identifying their current level against the Australian Curriculum. This helps us understand the skills they've mastered and where they need the most support right now. From there, we create a personalised learning plan tailored to your child's needs.

Personalised Learning Plans

Your child’s personalised learning plan is delivered weekly and can be completed at home on a tablet or computer. Each Monday, new 20-minute maths lessons are added based on your child’s progress, helping keep learning at the right level and supporting a consistent learning routine.

Proven Progress

As your child strengthens their foundations, you'll see them build skills and confidence in reading and writing, and keep moving forward at a pace that feels right for them.

English Tutors Available

Every family is matched with an English tutor who oversees their child's personalised learning plan and progress. Tutors also provide additional support with writing tasks, including planning, structure, grammar, punctuation and feedback on each draft.

Reading Comprehension: What's Covered and How We Help

Reading comprehension builds across multiple year levels of the Australian Curriculum. The overview below shows how these skills develop over time and how Kinetic Education can support your child at each stage.

Every child starts from a different point, so their personalised learning plan is tailored to their current level and continues to adapt based on their progress and results.

Year Level
What the Curriculum Covers
How Kinetic Helps
Foundation – Year 2
Reading short stories and simple information texts, matching pictures to words, and answering direct questions about what happened.
We use clear examples and interactive activities to help your child understand simple texts and answer questions with growing confidence.
Year 3 – Year 4
Reading short stories, recipes and information texts, and beginning to answer questions that require some inference rather than a direct answer from the text.
We break comprehension into manageable steps, helping your child find information in a text and start to work out what it implies.
Year 5 – Year 6
Following longer narratives and diary-style texts, understanding a wider vocabulary in context, and answering more detailed inference questions. This is also the NAPLAN stage, where earlier gaps tend to show under assessment.
We identify which earlier comprehension skills may be causing difficulty, then add targeted lessons to strengthen those gaps before moving into more complex texts and NAPLAN-style questions.
Year 7 – Year 8
Reading a wider range of fiction and non-fiction texts, recognising persuasive and propaganda techniques, and working out narrative roles and inference in longer stories.
We strengthen the reading strategies behind persuasive and inferential questions, so your child can apply them more confidently to unfamiliar texts.
Year 9 – Year 10
Analysing extracts, poetry and non-fiction texts, comparing texts and understanding how they can be interpreted differently. Students who are not confident here often find these years much harder than they need to be.
We revisit any earlier gaps and help your child build the close reading and analysis skills that Year 9 and 10 texts require.

Louise

Louise’s daughters started the school year feeling anxious to go to class, worried they wouldn’t understand maths concepts. But in just 4 months, their confidence has grown, and they are now happy to go to maths classes at school. Not only this, but their school reports and grades have boosted, but most importantly their confidence has too!

Rosie came to Kinetic Education looking for support for her two children, who both needed completely different support. Her daughter was really struggling with maths, and homework time was always stressful, while her son was one step ahead at school and starting to feel bored. English Tutoring Starts with Identifying Your Child’s Level

When your child gets started with Kinetic Education, we begin by identifying where they are currently working in English, including reading comprehension. This helps us see where they may need more practice and where they are ready to move ahead. From there, we create a personalised weekly learning plan, so your child can work through the curriculum at the right pace for them.

Personalised learning

We update your child's learning plan with new English activities for the week, selected based on their progress each week. Their learning plan moves through three stages: Revision and Catch-Up, Consolidation, and Extension.

Revision and Catch-Up

When your child first starts with Kinetic Education, their learning plan targets the areas they need the most support with. This may mean revisiting earlier reading comprehension skills and strengthening the foundations they need before moving into more complex texts.

Consolidation

As your child builds their understanding, their learning plan continues to reinforce the comprehension skills they are currently working on, helping them read and understand texts with more confidence.

Extension

When your child is ready to move ahead, their learning plan introduces more challenging texts and inference questions, helping them extend their understanding at a pace that suits them.

Personalised Learning with Real Tutor Support

Reading comprehension can become difficult when an earlier skill has not fully clicked. When your family joins Kinetic Education, you are matched with a tutor who helps your child get off to a strong start, oversees their personalised learning plan and keeps an eye on their progress each week.

Each activity is designed to teach your child step by step, provide instant feedback and help them build confidence as they work through comprehension across the curriculum.

Our English tutors also provide additional support with writing tasks. If your child is working on a piece of writing, their tutor can give feedback on planning, structure, grammar, punctuation and clarity, helping them improve their next draft with confidence.

Our tutors are also here for parents. You can speak with your tutor about your child's learning needs, progress and weekly reports, so you know how they are going and what they are working on next.

Tutor support includes:

  • A dedicated English tutor matched with your family
  • Oversight of your child's personalised learning plan
  • Feedback on writing tasks, including planning, structure, grammar, punctuation and clarity
  • Guidance for parents on progress, learning needs and weekly reports

FAQs

My child is in Year 5 and struggles to answer questions about what they've read. Will Kinetic Education help identify and fill any earlier gaps?

Yes, this is exactly the kind of thing we look for. If your child's difficulty with comprehension traces back to something that wasn't fully understood in an earlier year, their learning plan will address that first.

Will this help my child prepare for NAPLAN?

Reading comprehension is tested in NAPLAN for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Because our tutoring identifies and fills gaps aligned to the Australian Curriculum, children who learn with Kinetic Education tend to approach NAPLAN reading tasks with more confidence.

My child is in Year 8 and still struggles with inference questions. Is it too late to fix the foundations?

Yes. Algebra is part of the Australian Curriculum, which is followed across the country, so the core skills are the same wherever your child goes to school. Senior subject names can vary by state, but the foundations in Years 2 to 10 are shared.

How is reading comprehension content delivered?

Through interactive lessons designed to teach your child at the right level, each text and question type is broken into clear steps with instant feedback and worked explanations. When your child needs more than the lesson provides, their tutor is available to give feedback and guidance on their written work.

How much does it cost?

Kinetic Education's English support covers reading comprehension, along with the other key areas of the Australian English curriculum. It starts from $29 per week for the family, and your first two weeks are free.

Can I speak to someone about my child's specific needs before getting started?

Yes. When you book your free demonstration, we'll chat about how your child is currently going with reading, what they're finding difficult, and how Kinetic Education could support them.
