Mathematical Methods brings together higher-level skills across algebra, functions, graphs, calculus, probability and statistics. Students are often required to apply several of these skills within the same multi-step question.

Strong foundations make it easier for students to understand new concepts and apply them with confidence. Skills such as rearranging equations, factorising, working with functions and interpreting graphs all support the more advanced content introduced throughout Mathematical Methods.

By identifying and strengthening any earlier gaps, your child can focus more clearly on the concepts they are currently learning and continue building their skills as the subject progresses.

Assessment first

We start with an assessment to understand your child’s current maths level, identify any gaps in understanding across multiple year levels of the Australian Curriculum, and see where they are ready to move ahead. From there, we create a personalised weekly learning plan tailored to their needs.

Personalised Learning Plans

Your child’s personalised learning plan is delivered weekly and can be completed at home on a tablet or computer. Each Monday, new 20-minute maths lessons are added based on your child’s progress, helping keep learning at the right level and supporting a consistent learning routine.

What Mathematical Methods covers

Mathematical Methods is a senior secondary subject covering functions, calculus, probability and statistics. Across Years 11 and 12, students build from understanding functions and graphs to working with differential and integral calculus, random variables and probability distributions.

Students may work with linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions, as well as sequences, rates of change and differentiation. As they progress, they move into integration and more advanced probability, including binomial and normal distributions.

Many of these topics build on skills developed earlier in high school. Strengthening areas such as algebra, graphing, functions and problem solving can help students approach new Methods concepts with greater confidence.

Maths Tutoring Starts with Identifying Your Child’s Level

When your child gets started with Kinetic Education, their first step is completing our Maths Doctor assessment. This checks their maths skills across multiple year levels of the Australian Curriculum, including the algebra, graphing, functions and problem-solving skills that support Mathematical Methods.

The assessment helps us understand their current skills, identify any earlier gaps that may be affecting their progress and see where they are ready to move ahead.

It takes up to 45 minutes and gives us a clear starting point for your child’s personalised weekly learning plan. From there, we can strengthen the foundations they need while helping them continue working through Mathematical Methods at a pace that suits them.

Revision and Catch-Up

When your child first starts with Kinetic Education, their learning plan targets the knowledge gaps identified in their assessment. This may mean revisiting earlier skills in algebra, equations, graphing or functions and strengthening the foundations they need for Mathematical Methods.

Consolidation

As your child builds their understanding, their learning plan continues to reinforce the skills they are currently working on. Regular practice helps them use maths skills across the Mathematical Methods curriculum, including functions, calculus, probability and statistics, with greater confidence and apply what they have learned to different types of questions.

Extension

When your child is ready to move ahead, their learning plan introduces more challenging Mathematical Methods concepts and multi-step questions. This helps them deepen their understanding, connect ideas across different topics and apply their skills with greater confidence.

Personalised Learning with Real Tutor Support

Our interactive lessons break each idea into clear steps using diagrams, animations, text and worked examples. Your child can build the skills needed for Mathematical Methods, from strengthening algebra and functions through to working with calculus, probability and statistics.

If your child needs extra help, their tutor can step in. Using screen sharing and a digital whiteboard, tutors can support them with Methods questions and other maths concepts in real time. Tutor support is available after school, Monday to Thursday, up to 10 hours per week, at no extra cost.

Parent support: Each week you receive a report on what your child has worked on and how they're progressing, and you can call the Parent Helpline to speak directly with their tutor.

What is Mathematical Methods? 

Mathematical Methods is a major senior secondary maths subject studied in Years 11 and 12. It covers functions, differential and integral calculus, and probability and statistics, and is one of the more demanding maths subjects at senior level.

My child is struggling with calculus. Can you help?

Yes. If your child is finding calculus difficult, we start by looking at the skills underneath it, including algebra, functions and graphing. These foundations are often what make calculus feel harder than it needs to.
Our assessment helps identify where the gaps are, so your child’s personalised learning plan can support them from the right level.

Do you prepare students for senior exams?
