Finding the best school for your child can prove to be a tedious and overwhelming task. After all, choosing the right school for your child plays a pivotal role in shaping their academic journey. There is so much to consider when ensuring your child is in the best environment to reach their full potential, from personal development to future prospects. It is a lot of responsibility, so we want to make sure we have all the information we need to make the right choice. School rankings can be a valuable tool, in not only making an informed decision but to get a better understanding of the educational landscape in your area.
How are Australian schools ranked?
There are a number of factors that determine the top-ranking schools in Australia, such as the number of exams sat by the school, the number of students receiving high scores in particular subjects and school resourcing. School rankings also take into consideration NAPLAN results and the Index of ICSEA.
As the only national assessment on Literacy and Numeracy in the country, NAPLAN results are crucial in school rankings. The test assesses how well students are learning and being taught what is outlined in the Nation Curriculum. NAPLAN results allow us to see how schools are doing as a collective by monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of teaching methods and where extra support is needed. These results have long been a big factor in a parent's decision-making process when looking for a good school.
ICSEA which stands for the Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage, provides parents with an understanding of the socio-educational backgrounds of students at schools. It takes into account factors like parental education, occupation and location. This helps parents gain an understanding of a school's student population. ICSEA helps in comparing schools' academic achievements, whilst considering the socioeconomic backgrounds of their students.
How do you find the best school?
You can check school rankings through various sources like the My School and Good School Guide websites and educational publications. Having worked with students nationwide for over 30 years, Kinetic Education also offers a great guide to the top-ranking schools in Australia and what really makes a difference. These publications provide detailed information about different schools' past and present performance, detailing what can be expected at different schools.
Do school rankings affect ATAR?
School rankings don't necessarily influence ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) scores, but they can give a pretty good indication of what type of school environment helps nurture high achievers. Students from schools with higher performance rates often have better resources and support and may have a stronger academic culture. These can all be contributing factors to higher ATAR scores. However, it's important to note that ATAR scores are primarily based on individual student performance in their final examinations.
Do school rankings really matter in Australia?
Although school rankings are helpful when trying to find the best school in your area, they're not everything. Top-ranking schools aren't always a viable option for everyone so it's important to consider options outside of school if your child needs extra support. At Kinetic Education, we understand that excelling in Maths and English requires more than just attending a top-ranking school. We believe that every child has the potential to achieve their best with the proper support and guidance. Our affordable Maths tutoring and English tutoring programs are designed to bridge knowledge gaps and strengthen a student's foundation. This helps students excel and become independent learners. By providing a personalised learning program that is led by a student's needs and learning goals, our experienced tutors help eager students reach their full potential.
