What is NAPLAN?

NAPLAN, is the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy, which provides the measure to determine whether or not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes. As a parent, your child's NAPLAN results can tell you how much your child is learning at school. Do they know what they need to know? How are they really getting on compared with other children nationwide? But your child only does this test once every two years, and it takes a long time for the results to come out.

What's in the NAPLAN tests?

NAPLAN Reading Tests

In the field of English education in each state and territory's curriculum, students cultivate language and literacy skills that are then applied across various subjects. The NAPLAN reading tests assess proficiency in literacy within the English education area, aligning with the Australian Curriculum: English. These tests primarily focus on reading written English. Comprehension of language conventions within a context is also crucial for reading and is relevant to numerous reading questions. Students are presented with a selection of texts that exemplify different writing styles. They read these texts and respond to related questions. The tests encompass multiple-choice questions as well as technology-enhanced formats such as drag-and-drop and hot-text. The NAP public demonstration site showcases the assortment of question types, alongside accessibility features designed for students with disabilities.

NAPLAN Writing Tests

The Australian Curriculum: English mandates the teaching of various forms of writing, encompassing imaginative, informative, and persuasive writing. In the writing test, regardless of whether students are in Year 3 or Year 5, 7, or 9, and regardless of whether they take the test on paper or online, they all receive the same text type or genre of writing task. Each testing day and student year level feature different prompts, known as "writing stimuli," which provide ideas or topics for students to respond to in a specific text type. These prompts cater to the expected capabilities of students from Years 3 to 9. The use of multiple prompts does not affect how teachers prepare their students for the NAPLAN writing test. The text type, whether narrative or persuasive, is disclosed on the day of the assessment, with no option for choice. Examples of persuasive and narrative prompts can be found below, along with an example prompt in the NAP public demonstration site writing test for Years 5, 7, and 9.

NAPLAN Conventions of Language Tests

The tests for conventions of language evaluate spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills. Proficiency in language is crucial for effective communication in all areas of learning. While language skills are developed throughout various subjects, the conventions of language tests specifically focus on English language learning. These tests align with the Australian Curriculum: English, ensuring that the content assessed corresponds with the curriculum guidelines. The conventions of language tests concentrate on the use and comprehension of standard Australian English in written form. These skills play a vital role in reading and writing development. The test content complements the writing tests by assessing spelling, grammar, and punctuation within a contextual framework. However, understanding language conventions is also important for reading comprehension. The tests encompass different question formats, including multiple-choice, text entry, and technology-enhanced questions like drag-and-drop and hot-text. The NAP public demonstration site offers various item types and accessibility features to accommodate students with disabilities.

NAPLAN Numeracy Tests

The NAPLAN numeracy tests evaluate students' performance in mathematical concepts, skills, and comprehension based on the guidelines provided in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. These tests assess students' proficiency in various aspects, including understanding, fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning across the three content strands of mathematics: number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability. The numeracy tests consist of a variety of question formats, including multiple-choice, text entry, and technology-enhanced questions like drag-and-drop and hot-text. The NAP public demonstration site showcases examples of the question types that may appear in the numeracy test, along with the accessibility features that students commonly utilise.
